How
to prevent varicose and spider veins
-
Compression stockings
-
Exercise
The
main purpose of graduated compression stockings is to reduce
pressure in the superficial vein system of the leg. These
stockings exert greater pressure at the ankle than at the
thigh, and "push" the blood in the veins back
up the leg. This helps slow the development of varicose
and spider veins, and relieves symptoms such as fatigue,
heaviness and inflammation. The stockings should not be
considered, however, as a replacement for treatment.

Walking
doubles the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings
Any
physical activity, but especially walking, is a wonderful way
to exercise the calf muscles. When these muscles contract, they
compress the veins in the deep vein system and force the blood
upwards.
